Tech Talks
About Our Tech Talks
Our Tech Talks are for any students who have an interest in technology and would like to learn about up and coming technologies that aren’t typically taught in the classroom.
We bring in ePartners and club sponsors to come in and talk about a new technology, generally one they’re using at their company, for about one to one and a half hours.
You can bring yourself, a few friends, and some questions you may have for the speaker and enjoy food and refreshments during the talk.

SAS Machine Learning Tech Talk
There’s lots of work in the field of machine learning on researching algorithms to create powerful predictive models. In some industries, however, adoption of these algorithms has been slow due to a variety of reasons including, model trust, lack of understanding, and governmental regulations. To help address the adoption issue, researchers have worked in the field of explaining model predictions.
On Tuesday, March 5, Senior Machine Learning Developer, Ralph Abbey, PhD from SAS came to talk about the steps of a research and development project on model-agnostic methods for explanations of predictive models.
ROI Revolution Software Metrics & Monitoring with Datadog Tech Talk
Correcting bugs can be painful. Some of the worst bugs are ones that only cause problems occasionally - resource leaks, network errors, and edge cases of all types. Logs can help to address these failures, but are difficult to comb through, and if you want any kind of aggregate statistic, you have to perform command-line acrobatics.
Datadog is a modern monitoring tool that helps track your application’s performance in real time, identify bottlenecks, and detect recurring problems at a glance.
Software Developers Troy Rosenberg and Danny Rivers from ROI Revolution came to demonstrate to our students how they use Datadog to collect real-time metrics to respond to problems immediately and correct some of the most troublesome bugs.

Eastman Tech Talk Review
On Thursday, we had Mark S. McDavid and a data science associate at Eastman come and give a talk on SQL, specifically Microsoft SQL Server. Eastman, like most companies, is quite reliant on data extraction and analysis for day to day operations, so SQL knowledge is pretty paramount!
Vanguard Tech Talk Review
On Tuesday, two representatives from the Vanguard Group came out to speak with us about the MEAN software bundle and Hadoop, two technologies that they use every day to build web apps and crunch numbers behind the scene.
